Loja is the capital of Ecuador’s Loja Province, set in the Cuxibamba Valley in the south of the country, bordering the provinces of Zamora‑Chinchipe and El Oro, and Peru to the south. Renowned for its strong artistic heritage, it’s known as the Music and Cultural Capital of Ecuador and is home to two major universities. The Pan‑American Highway passes by the city. Main tourist attractions include: • Pio Jaramillo Alvarado Museum of Music of the Central Culture – with permanent exhibitions on Lojano music and composers, a concert hall, temporary exhibition space, a café and a small music shop. • Madres Conceptas Museum. • Central Bank of Ecuador Museum – an archaeological museum focused on the colonial history of the area. • Lojanidad Archaeological Museum. • Door of the City Museum – recreates the city’s history and hosts exhibitions of local painting, sculpture and photography. • Jardín Botánico Reinaldo Espinosa – a botanical garden with over 800 native and exotic species, serving as a living laboratory for scientific research and environmental education.
